The Heart of Kandy
Walking through the streets of Kandy during the Esala Perahera is an assault on the senses in the best way possible. The smell of jasmine and coconut oil hangs thick in the air, while the rhythmic thumping of the Geta Beraya drums echoes off the colonial facades.
My Role
As a volunteer, I was tasked with assisting the local coordination team near the Temple of the Tooth. Here is what I learned:
- Patience is key: The crowds gather hours before the first torch is lit.
- Community spirit: Locals often share food and water with strangers sitting beside them.
“The festival isn’t just a parade; it’s the living heartbeat of Sinhalese identity.”
Conclusion
If you are considering joining the NGO as a volunteer, try to time your visit with this festival. It provides a cultural context that no textbook can offer.
